School Turnaround

School turnaround is sometimes necessary to improve achievement in chronically under-performing schools that may even be facing the threat of closure. The urgency and crisis of such poor performance should incite outrage as well as a call to action that initiates sustainable and successful reform. Turnaround requires bold action on the part of the state, but it cannot be a solely top-down reform because states do not have the capacity to implement on the scale necessary. Instead, the state must work together with districts and outside partners. Input from families and communities is a critical element, allowing the turnaround to be owned by and accountable to the community.
